comrade from the German Air Force ...
In Guenther's own words
....... I was stationed at Mt Schneeberg from early 1965 until end of 1967 (
acting as NCOIC GAF Det there as successor for" Mr. Scrotum" ‑ Nickname for GAF
First Sgt). First I used to be billeted at the "Mansion" ‑ First entrance to
the left" just opposite the mess hall where SSgt ( later Capt GAF) Wolfgang
Mueller - the owner of a warship‑grey Opel sedan - used to reside. ( You might have known Wolfgang , last I have heard from
him was in 1992. ) Then we moved uphill to the barracks with the
old pool table and piano , just the same building as the "US ‑
Grocery (PX)", and still working out of the old Fichtelgebirsgvereins ‑ hut "Kennel".
End of 1967 ,GAF abandoned
the Mt Schneeberg billets for the newly constructed barracks and we left the
hill. However, later in 1968 I became responsible for Security and CI
for the German part of the hill and was often up on the hill until my family
and I left for Belgium in 1985 for a new assignment at SHAPE.
After 4 years back to
Germany, with a new assignment at Messtetten, then moving in 1991 to Kalkar,
Germany, taking part in the birth of Reaction Forces Air Staff, as NATO Staff,
then back to Meßstetten in 1994 to a GAF Higher HQ, retiring in 1998. I
am still a member of the reserve force , doing sometimes some TDY in the old
trade.
