Very interesting!  Looks like the life and times didn't change regardless of where or when you had the ASA experience.

These photos are from Rick Bunker's Mt. Meisner web site - thanks Rick for giving me permission to copy the pictures.  Scroll down to the bottom of this page to learn more about Rick and some Russina Linguists from the 1980s.

Under construction -- initially created 05/31/98, last updated long, long ago

There is a 331st ASA page on military.com, you should really take a look at it.

Check out the ASA Alpiners page!

PICTURES!!!! -- thanks to John Wheeler

Even more pictures -- thanks again John.

I was a Russian linguist (98G1LRU) in the 331st Army Security Agency Company from November 1981 through March 1984, although by 1984 it had been re-designated the 165th MI Battalion.  I was in the 2nd COMEX (communications exploitation) platoon.  The 331st was part of the 302nd ASA Bn.   We were in Karlsruhe, Germany, at Gerszewski Kaserne, with a detachment at Mt Meissner.  I would like to find as many people as possible who were in the 331st, and use this page as a resource for old friends to find each other.  I would also love to post photos and reminiscences here, so please send me your stuff.  If you were in the 331st or the 165th, please send me an e-mail with contact information that you want me to post on this page.

Here are the contacts that I have so far:

Dave Fillingham.  "I was in the 331st in 1977 - 1979 - both at Karlsruhe and Mt. Meissner (a 33S) and returned as a KP at Mt. Meissner in 1981-1982. I married a 98G who was stationed there - that's how I ended up a KP."

David de la Rocha Russian Linguist 165 MI Bn Jan 84 - Jul 86 Duty in both Karlsruhe & Wiesbaden e-mail: david@willowcottage.org website: www.willowcottage.org

Chuck Shanley  Rick, Nice pics of the mountain. From the looks of them you didn't see the two big towers the 90 foot next to the mess hall and the 180 foot in the north east corner with the inflatable balloon. I was there in '66 as a 26K and installed or work on everything there, including trying to fix the power converter under the mess hall before we got good power lines from outside.  Nice to know some place like that is still remembered.

Mike Wason, 98G German (back then), early 80's

Frank Harvey, 98C, early 80's (contact Rick Bunker or Mike Wason for Frank)

Rick Bunker, 98G Russian, '81-'84

Steve Simmons, 98G Russian, '78-'80 (Meissner)

William R. Spence, Jr., was stationed at Meissner from about November of 1971 to April of 1973 in signal maintenance, 33G20 and 33D20.

John Wheeler sent in these GREAT pictures -- look at them now!

Mike Swink was in the service from 69 - 72, at Meissner part of the time.

People who were at the 331st while I was there might remember the patches we had made when we were transmogrified into the 165th MI Bn.  Thanks to Kip Webb for sending me the image.

Send me your comments, or just let me know you were here.
